Thinking of buying a new charger for your iPhone online? Well, you might want to reconsider.
Technically, ‘more savings’ generally means ‘good’—unless, of course, ‘more savings’ also means ‘it will ultimately explode on your face while you’re sleeping’. What I’m trying to say is this: phony Apple chargers, DON’T BUY THEM.
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recently reported that nearly 99 percent of phony Apple chargers sold online by various retailers are unsafe for use with Apple products. The group recently conducted an experiment during National Consumer Week, which involved 400 of these allegedly fake chargers, alongside other accessories, bought from various suppliers worldwide, and only three—yes, just three—passed a preliminary safety test. The rest of the 397 chargers all failed as electrical hazards.
The odds that TSI cited are extremely concerning, since this means that when you cut corners and buy phony Apple chargers online, there’s a 99 percent chance that you’d get one that’ll put your life in danger. For perspective, let’s just say that even lightning hitting you during a thunderstorm doesn’t have those odds.
Apple products are subject to various safety protocols and extensive quality checking, so users hardly have to worry about their safety when using accessories bundled with their products. This, however, cannot be said of many an independent accessories manufacturer out to make a quick pound.
Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the National Trading Standards Board, cautions that “Criminals across the globe are using online platforms to lure you in with cheap deals for fake items, many of which are dangerous and have been known to overheat and cause house fires.”
TSI duly cautioned that while consumers might save a few pounds from counterfeit chargers and accessories, it could ultimately cost them their homes and their families. They urged customers to buy legitimate accessories from official retailers, and to buy second-hand electrical goods only from trusted suppliers. Read the full story here.
(As an aside, every accessory that comes packages with your NDBD products—chargers included--comes directly from Apple, so your safety is guaranteed. ;D)
